SCHOLASTIC CLAY TARGET PROGRAM DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP
June 16, 2007
Sixty five Tennessee Scholastic Clay Target Program shooters competed Saturday, June 16 for the District SCTP Championship at Memphis Sport Shooting Association. Arlington High School’s “Navy” squad broke 463 of 500 clay targets for the victory over five other local schools. Arlington held off a strong challenge by Houston High, which finished just one bird behind AHS. Arlington’s “Gold” took third by one bird after a deciding shootout with Christian Brothers High School. Arlington’s winning Navy squad consisted of Cody Cochran, Brandon Barker, Taylor Garrison, Curtis Robinson, and Keaton Irving. Houston’s second place was taken by Richard Provience, Hunter Underwood, Eric Bell, J.P. Sullivan, and Kristen Nowag. Arlington’s third place Gold squad was made up of Matt Holt, Matt Segerson, Johnny Newman, Matt Lollar, and Jarrett Spegele.
Individually, the top gun at the shoot was Christian Brothers’ Hunter Delano with a 98/100. A second and third place tied score of 97 was settled in a shootout where J.P. Sullivan of Houston beat Hunter Bourland of Bolton. Also participating in the shoot were athletes from Briarcrest and ECS.
“I really enjoyed watching these young athletes in this type of District competition,” said Kevin Carter, Houston Coach and organizer of the event. “The close scores of this competition are a reflection of the program’s success over the past couple of years. It is really a testament to the SCTP and coaching staffs as well as these athletes who continue to make this a safe sport with such a high caliber of competition in the Shelby County area. It is rewarding to see them display wonderful sportsmanship and their passion for shooting sports.”
The next target for these shooters will be the Tennessee State Champion title. The Tennessee State Championship Shoot will be held at Nashville’s Tennessee Clay Target Complex June 29th-July 1st. The Tennessee Scholastic Clay Target Program is a program supported by Tennessee Wildlife Federation in cooperation with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Additional support is provided by Friends of the NRA. The Shelby County Scholastic Clay Target Association is grateful to Memphis Sport Shooting Association for providing their facility for the competition.
